Let’s start with an uncomfortable truth: Every crypto transaction you’ve ever made is public.
Not “visible to the government.” Not “accessible with a warrant.” Public. As in, anyone with an internet connection can see exactly how much you sent, when you sent it, and to whom.
Your wallet is a glass box. And everyone is watching.
The Glass Box Problem
Imagine if your bank account worked like this:
- Every deposit you receive? Published online.
- Every bill you pay? Visible to your neighbors.
- Your entire financial history? Searchable by anyone.
That’s how most blockchains work today.
When you receive your salary in crypto, your employer can see your entire financial history. When you buy coffee, the shop can see how much you’re worth. When you donate to a cause, everyone knows about it.
This isn’t a bug. It’s how blockchains were designed. Transparency was the feature, not the problem.
But it became a problem.
Why This Matters (Real Examples)
The Refund Attack: You buy something online. The seller refunds you. Now they have your wallet address. They can see your balance, your other purchases, even track your future transactions. Forever.
The Salary Leak: Your company pays you in crypto. Your colleagues can look up the transaction. Now everyone knows exactly what you make.
The Donation Dilemma: You want to support a cause privately. But the moment you donate, it’s linked to your identity. Political opponents, employers, or trolls can find it.
The Whale Target: You hold a significant amount of crypto. This is visible on-chain. You become a target for hackers, scammers, and even physical threats.
These aren’t hypotheticals. Blockchain analytics companies like Chainalysis and Arkham Intelligence have built entire businesses around tracking wallets and linking them to real identities.
The Two Ways to Hide
So how do you get privacy in a system designed for transparency?
Projects like Encrypt.trade are building privacy-first trading infrastructure. But to understand what they’re doing, you need to know the two fundamentally different approaches to privacy:
Approach 1: Hide in the Crowd
This is how Tornado Cash and Privacy Cash work. The idea is simple:
- You put your money into a shared pool
- Other people put their money into the same pool
- Everyone withdraws to new addresses
- No one can tell which deposit matches which withdrawal
It’s like shuffling cards. Your transaction gets mixed with others, making it hard to trace.
The catch? Your privacy depends on the crowd. If you’re the only person in the pool, there’s no hiding. If you deposit an unusual amount, you might stand out. The bigger the crowd, the better you hide.
Approach 2: Hide with Math
This is what SIP Protocol does. Instead of hiding in a crowd, we use cryptography to make your information invisible.
Think of it like a locked box:
- The box contains your transaction amount
- Anyone can verify the box is valid (it follows the rules)
- But no one can see what’s inside without your permission
The technical term is “Pedersen commitment,” but here’s what matters: Your privacy doesn’t depend on how many other people are using the system. Whether you’re the first user or the millionth, your transaction is equally private.
The One-Time Mailbox
There’s another problem: wallet addresses.
Every time someone sends you crypto, they can see your entire wallet. Every past transaction. Every future one.
SIP solves this with “stealth addresses” - think of them as one-time mailboxes:
- Someone wants to send you crypto
- Instead of using your regular address, the system generates a unique, one-time address
- Only you can open this mailbox
- The sender can’t see your other transactions
- Even if they try sending again, they get a completely different address
It’s like having a new, untraceable P.O. box for every single transaction you receive.
But What About Compliance?
Here’s where most privacy solutions fail. They offer all-or-nothing:
- Either everything is visible (no privacy)
- Or nothing is visible (can’t comply with regulations)
This is a problem. If you run a business, you need to show your books to auditors. If you pay taxes, you need to prove your income. “Hide everything forever” doesn’t work in the real world.
SIP Protocol introduces viewing keys. Think of them as special access passes:
- Your transactions are private by default
- But you can generate a key that lets specific people see specific transactions
- Your auditor can verify your books
- Your tax authority can see your income
- Random strangers still see nothing
You choose who sees what. That’s what “selective privacy” means.

If you use crypto, you have three choices:

The Future of Private Money
Privacy isn’t about hiding wrongdoing. It’s about choice.
You probably don’t broadcast your bank balance on social media. Not because you’re doing something wrong, but because financial privacy is normal. Expected. Healthy.
Crypto got this backwards. Early designs prioritized transparency over privacy. Now we’re building the tools to fix that - without sacrificing the benefits of blockchain technology.
Privacy should be the default, not the exception.
