Chainalysis: The $8.6 Billion Surveillance Giant
Chainalysis is the undisputed leader in blockchain surveillance. Founded in 2014, the company reached an $8.6 billion valuation by 2022. Their clients include the FBI, IRS, DEA, ICE, and the tax authorities of over 60 countries.
What do they do? They trace cryptocurrency transactions. Every single one.
Chainalysis maintains a database linking wallet addresses to real identities. When you buy crypto on Coinbase, that exchange knows who you are (thanks to KYC requirements). Chainalysis knows which addresses belong to Coinbase. They connect the dots.
Their software, Chainalysis Reactor, allows investigators to visualize the flow of funds across thousands of transactions. What looks like a complex web of anonymous transfers becomes a clear trail leading directly to you.

They’re not exaggerating.
Arkham Intelligence: Deanonymization as a Service
If Chainalysis is surveillance for governments, Arkham Intelligence is surveillance for everyone.
Arkham launched in 2023 with a disturbing premise: a bounty marketplace where anyone can pay for information that links wallet addresses to real identities. They call it an “intel-to-earn” platform. Critics call it doxxing-as-a-service.
The Arkham Intel Exchange allows users to post bounties asking questions like: “Who owns this wallet?” Other users can claim bounties by providing identifying information. The platform takes a cut.
Arkham also provides its own analytics. Their dashboard shows you the holdings, transaction history, and identified owners of millions of wallets. Type in any address and see who owns it—or at least, who Arkham thinks owns it.
The company raised $150 million and launched its own token (ARKM). Their business model is literally monetizing your financial privacy.
The Supporting Cast
Chainalysis and Arkham are the most prominent, but they’re not alone:
Elliptic — Founded in 2013, Elliptic provides “blockchain analytics” to financial institutions and governments. They’ve traced over $1 billion in illicit transactions and helped law enforcement in major criminal cases. Their database covers Bitcoin, Ethereum, and over 100 other blockchains.
Nansen — Positioned as a tool for “smart money” tracking, Nansen lets anyone see what whale wallets are buying and selling. While marketed to traders, the same technology reveals the activities of anyone with significant holdings.
TRM Labs — A favorite of law enforcement, TRM Labs has contracts with numerous government agencies. They specialize in cross-chain tracking and can follow funds across bridges and multiple blockchains.
Crystal Blockchain — Owned by Bitfury, Crystal provides transaction monitoring and risk assessment. They focus heavily on compliance, helping exchanges identify “risky” addresses—which includes privacy-conscious users.
Merkle Science — Singapore-based surveillance firm serving APAC governments and exchanges. They’re building the surveillance infrastructure for Asia’s crypto markets.
Together, these companies form a surveillance apparatus that would make traditional intelligence agencies envious. They see everything, remember everything, and sell everything.
How They Track You: The Techniques
Understanding how surveillance works is the first step to protecting yourself.
Address Clustering: Linking Your Wallets Together
You think you have multiple wallets? They know you have one identity.
Address clustering exploits a fundamental behavior: when you spend from multiple addresses in a single transaction, those addresses are assumed to belong to the same entity. The blockchain permanently records that connection.
Your "separate" wallets:
Wallet A (used for salary)
Wallet B (used for trading)
Wallet C (used for "privacy")
You make ONE transaction using both A and B:
Surveillance companies now know A, B, and C are all YOU
One mistake. Permanent linkage.
This is called the “common input ownership heuristic,” and it’s devastatingly effective. Researchers have shown that over 70% of Bitcoin addresses can be clustered into identifiable entities using this technique alone.
Exchange KYC: Your Identity Enters the System
Every time you use a centralized exchange, you feed the surveillance machine.
Exchanges like Coinbase, Binance, and Kraken are required to collect your identity documents—passport, driver’s license, proof of address. This is Know Your Customer (KYC) compliance. They know exactly who you are.
When you deposit or withdraw crypto, the exchange links your verified identity to your blockchain addresses. That data doesn’t stay with the exchange. They share it with:
- Tax authorities (automatically, in many countries)
- Law enforcement (upon request, often without warrant)
- Blockchain analytics firms (through partnerships)
Your “anonymous” wallet address is now attached to your legal name, home address, and social security number. Forever.
Timing Analysis: When You Transact Reveals You
Even if you try to break the chain, timing betrays you.
If you deposit 1.5 ETH to a mixer at 3:47 PM and someone withdraws 1.5 ETH at 3:52 PM, sophisticated analysis can correlate these transactions. You might be the only person who deposited that exact amount around that time.
Surveillance companies build probabilistic models that become more accurate as they gather more data. They don’t need certainty—they build confidence scores. “There’s an 87% chance that address X belongs to person Y” is often enough for their purposes.
Amount Correlation: Unique Amounts Are Fingerprints
Did you ever send an unusual amount? That’s a fingerprint.
If you receive 1,247.83 USDC in salary and later deposit exactly 1,247.83 USDC to DeFi, you’ve created a linkable breadcrumb. Even if you use different addresses, the unique amount ties them together.
Surveillance companies maintain databases of known amounts—salaries, prices of NFT purchases, specific DeFi positions. They correlate flows based on these amounts, even across different chains and protocols.
Dust Attacks: They Send YOU Money to Track You
Here’s a disturbing technique: attackers send tiny amounts of crypto to your wallet specifically to track you.
These “dust” transactions—often worth fractions of a cent—sit in your wallet. If you ever consolidate funds and accidentally include the dust in a transaction, you’ve linked your addresses together.
Sophisticated dust attacks use unique amounts that serve as tracking beacons. When that dust moves, the attacker knows which other addresses belong to you.
Some attacks are targeted—sent to specific individuals they want to track. Others are broadcast attacks, dusting thousands of wallets hoping some will slip up.
Social Engineering: You Tell Them Yourself
Sometimes the simplest techniques are the most effective.
Your ENS name? Public. Your Twitter bio with an ETH address? Public. Your Discord announcement that you just bought a certain NFT? Public.
Surveillance companies scrape social media, forums, and public databases to link real identities to wallet addresses. They use AI to analyze writing patterns and match anonymous posts to identified accounts.
They build “entity databases” connecting:
- Social media accounts
- ENS domains
- Poap attendance
- NFT holdings
- Forum posts
- GitHub contributions
One slip—one time you publicly linked your identity to an address—and your entire transaction history is deanonymized.
Graph Analysis: Mapping Your Entire Network
The most powerful technique combines all the others.
Surveillance companies build massive graphs—networks of connected addresses, identities, and behaviors. Every transaction creates an edge. Every identified address propagates identity to its neighbors.

Once they identify you at any point in this graph, the identification spreads. Your friend’s friend who you sent $50 to? Now they know them too.
This is why isolated operational security (OpSec) fails. You can be perfect, but one connection to someone who isn’t compromises you.
Real Horror Stories
This isn’t theoretical. Real people have suffered real consequences.
The $5 Wrench Attack
In crypto circles, the “$5 wrench attack” is a dark joke: why hack someone’s wallet when you can just threaten them with a wrench?
Public blockchain balances make this terrifyingly practical.
In 2023, a crypto investor in Hong Kong was kidnapped and held for ransom after attackers identified his holdings through on-chain analysis. They knew exactly how much he had and demanded access to his wallets.
Home invasions targeting crypto holders have increased dramatically. In Brazil, attacks rose 340% in a single year. The UK has seen similar trends. Attackers don’t guess who has crypto—they know, because the blockchain tells them.
The Salary Snoop
A software developer received her salary in USDC—a reasonable choice for faster, cheaper payments. What she didn’t anticipate: her coworkers could see exactly what she earned.
Her company paid everyone from the same wallet. Anyone who received payment could see all other payment amounts. Her negotiated raise? Public knowledge. The salary discrepancy between her and her male colleague doing the same job? Visible to anyone who looked.
She asked to be paid in traditional currency instead. Her employer refused, citing “efficiency.”
The Stalker’s Gift
A woman received small amounts of crypto from an ex-partner. What seemed like a strange gesture was actually surveillance.
By sending her dust transactions, he could monitor when she moved funds. When she consolidated wallets, he discovered her new addresses. He could see her NFT purchases, her DeFi activity, her entire financial life.

The artist’s real name was posted on Twitter. They received death threats within hours. They haven’t posted art since.
The Tax Surprise
A DeFi user thought they were clever, moving funds through multiple wallets and protocols. Their accountant couldn’t follow it. Surely the IRS couldn’t either?
They received an audit letter listing every single transaction. The IRS had purchased Chainalysis software. They knew everything—the trades, the yields, the “losses” that weren’t reported, the wash sales.
The penalties exceeded the original tax owed.
